A Story from Savannah at Young Life
John 1:14 (MSG) says, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. We saw the glory with our own eyes, the one-of-a-kind glory, the Father; like Son, Generous inside and out, true from start to finish.” I moved to Estero in June of 2020 without any idea what the Lord had for me here. I was asked to start Young Life at Estero and Bonita Springs High School. I prayed a crazy prayer on the drive to my new home, “God give me the football players and cheerleaders. If they get on board maybe the rest of the school will follow.” Who would have thought that two years later I would be asked to become the freshman cheer coach at Estero High School?
I moved into this neighborhood of Lee County and entered a people group who is a completely different culture than my own. I have never cheered before in my life and I didn’t even have friends who were cheerleaders growing up. But I have been slowly learning their language and spending my Mondays - Fridays with these girls with the intention of inviting them to Young Life and starting a Bible study with them. I am praying they will know Jesus!
At a recent home Estero football game, I hung out with my freshman cheer squad at the varsity game. I am twenty-five years old and I stood with them in the student section and when there was a lightning delay I sat with them in the gym. When we went back out to the game after the initial lightning delay I went and sat with some parents for a few minutes. A couple freshman girls came to find me and said, “Savannah, come stand with us in the student section!” Usually students are uncomfortable with the fact that an adult is standing with them but these girls came and asked me to be with them!
John 1:12 says, “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” I am praying that if these girls can want me to stand with them in the student section which seems so impossible to me; just maybe these girls will want Jesus in their lives as well!
