STUDENT MINISTRY UPDATES

Our youth had an amazing time at our inaugural Different By Design event! This evening was all about special activities tailored for both guys and girls. The girls gathered at New Hope to unleash their creativity by painting glass tumblers, while the guys enjoyed a great game of flag football over at Centennial Park. We can’t wait for the next one!

On Sunday evening, the youth guys and dads gathered at Wa-Ke-Hatchee Park for an exciting time of basketball! Matthew also gave an inspiring devotion about doing everything for the glory of God. It was such a great time that they've decided to make it a monthly tradition!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

PENNY LYNCH

Penny Lynch, one of six siblings, faced the loss of her father at the age of three. Her mother remarried when she was eight. Originally from Quincy, Illinois, Penny was raised in Tioga, a quaint town of just 150 residents that felt like an ideal setting for family life. Church played a constant role throughout her upbringing, going to church regularly every Sunday.

At 19, Penny married and moved to Boston, MA, experiencing quite the culture shock. She has three children: Jennifer, who resides in Lockhart, TX, with Penny’s only grandchild, Ruby; Shawn, who is recently engaged and lives in Reston, VA; and Loretta, based in Framingham, MA. In December 2013, Penny began snowbirding in Ft Myers, eventually moving here permanently in October 2017. Before her eyesight declined, she delighted in counted cross stitch, crocheting, reading, and most passionately, fishing—particularly reminiscing about her days fishing in Bokeelia.

Penny’s lifelong involvement with the church deeply influenced her children's upbringing. Although busy lives and demanding jobs led both Penny and her ex-husband astray from regular church attendance, recent personal turmoil prompted a return to faith. “I was feeling lost and alone. My family encouraged me to get involved with church again. By chance, I came upon New Hope. I started attending this time last year. I have met the nicest people and feel a peace in my heart that has been missing for a very long time” says Penny, and she joined as a member in March.

Volunteering every Wednesday in the church office, Penny has embraced the opportunity to connect with others and meet new people. She has been met with newfound happiness and a welcoming atmosphere and she encourages everyone to get involved with volunteering and positively impact others’ lives.

The youth group has started a book club! If you are a middle school or high school student that loves to read, come join us every first Sunday of the month at 12:30pm in Room 212 beginning August 3. The first book we are reading is And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. Purchase a copy or find it at the library and read the book prior to our meeting! Join our book club GroupMe by talking to Ashleigh Blythe so that you can vote on the next month’s book. This book club is student-led by Kaitlin Sorbello and Emma Woosley, and is open to any 6th-12th graders! We hope to see you there!

THE B. FAMILY

(Sensitive Location)

An update from the B. family, our global partners serving in the Middle East...

It felt good to meet as a team again in our host country after our evacuation from the war. As we spent time listening to the Father for what He would have us do in this next season, we felt that we should make a shift at our outreach center from "lecture-type classes" (like English and Arabic) to "discussion-based classes" focused on growth and transformation. We felt strongly that as we live out Kingdom principles and encourage others to do the same, we will build trust with those around us that will lead to openness to the message we want to share.

Rima, our Syrian MBB teammate, designed a new class for the center focused on character. The topics include honesty, contentment, jealousy, forgiveness, and trust. During each class, Rima introduces the topic, shares a story from the Bible related to the topic, and leads a discussion on the ways these character traits are commonly displayed (or not displayed) with family, friends, neighbors, and community. The discussions are always lively. “White-lies are necessary!” “No, we shouldn’t lie.” “There’s no way I could ever forgive my sister.” “I want to try to be more honest with my family.” “What if everyone lived with integrity; imagine what a world that would be!”

After seven weeks of meeting with the ladies, a woman showed up to the class and told Rima that her daughter-in-law couldn't make it today and asked Rima to record her attendance as "present." Rima told her that she couldn't do that, that it doesn't matter if she attends or not, and it wouldn't be right to record her present when she was absent.

The woman pushed harder, "Come on, it's not a big deal. Do it just this once, for me.  We won't tell anyone." Rima told her that she couldn't because it wouldn't be honest and that she is placed in the position based on trust. The woman smiled, "Wow! We wanted to test you to see if you lived out what you are teaching at this center. My daughter-in-law is five minutes behind me.”

Rima was shocked and encouraged by these ladies’ scheming together to test her. Our witness is counter-cultural, and we are praying that these ladies and their families will see that the Way of the Kingdom is indeed the Way of Life. We pray that they will trust us as we invite them to study the Scriptures together and will ultimately trust the One who offers new life in Him.

Thank you for praying with us,
The B's
